What's the best window film for blocking heat?
The film with the highest rated total solar energy rejected, at a visible light level you can live with. There is no single winning product, and any guide that names one without seeing your glass is guessing.
The International Window Film Association puts the rule plainly: the better the total solar energy rejection, the better the heat control. That single number is what to compare, because it rolls ultraviolet, visible light and infrared into one figure.
The Construction Specifier explains how films actually achieve it: they are constructed with either metal or with particles that absorb infrared light, and the National Fenestration Rating Council rates film effectiveness the same way it rates windows, with solar heat gain coefficient measuring how much energy the film blocks. Capable film in that family can reflect up to 80 percent of the sun's heat and block up to 99 percent of ultraviolet.

How do the film types actually differ?
They differ in what the film is made of and whether it reflects or absorbs the sun's energy, which changes both performance and where the film can safely go.
The Construction Specifier groups them by construction: some films are clear multi-layer polyester built to hold shattered glass together, others are tinted with metals, dyes or pigments to cut visible light transmittance and block solar heat, and decorative films imitate frosted or etched glass.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory adds the part that matters for heat. Roughly half the energy in sunlight is infrared, so a spectrally selective film can cut solar heat gain without cutting visible light. The same report notes that reflective films outperform absorbing films, because an absorbing film re-radiates some of the captured heat into the room, and that films with low surface emittance, around 0.5 and around 0.05, add insulating value and lower the solar heat gain coefficient further.
On durability, LBNL reports that a professional installation of traditional plastic applied film typically carries a 6 to 15 year warranty, with many installations still working beyond it.
Ask for the manufacturer's rated numbers on the specific film we quote, because generic per-type figures vary widely from source to source and many of the ones online are measured on a different product class.
How much heat can window film really block?
Up to 80 percent of the sun's heat on capable film, though the honest answer for your energy bill is more mixed than that headline.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory ran a solar control film retrofit for the U.S. General Services Administration. In a St. Louis federal office, film applied to the outside of double glazed windows cut measured cooling energy by about 30%, while the same film on the inside of that double glazing saved 8% or less. In that building the extra winter heating outweighed the cooling savings, so total energy rose.
The Department of Energy's Building America Solution Center says the same in plainer terms: window films are most appropriate in warm to hot climates, should target a low solar heat gain coefficient, and may increase heating needs in winter. The NFRC consumer guide agrees that because solar control film also blocks solar heat gain in winter months, these films are ideal for cooling-dominated climates.
So in Niagara, treat heat film as a summer comfort and cooling measure aimed at the glass that actually bakes. 100th Meridian's own estimate for local homes is cooling savings of roughly 10 to 30 percent, often $150 to $500 a year. That is our figure, not a number from a published study.
How do I read window film specs like TSER, VLT, and UV?
Three numbers do most of the work: TSER, VLT and UV rejection. Compare on TSER first, then decide how bright you want the glass.
TSER, total solar energy rejected, combines ultraviolet, visible light and infrared into one figure, and higher is better. The IWFA states the relationship directly: the better the total solar energy rejection, the better the heat control.
VLT, visible light transmission, is how much light comes through. Higher VLT keeps rooms bright and the view natural; lower VLT means a darker film. The Department of Energy notes that a window's solar heat gain coefficient runs from 0 to 1, and the lower the number, the less solar heat the glass lets in.
UV rejection is where good film is strongest. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that window film can block more than 99% of UVA and UVB light, and its Seal of Recommendation requires proof of 99 percent or better. A dermatology review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology explains why that matters indoors: ultraviolet scatters diffusely, so someone under a covering such as the roof of a car or a house is not completely protected.
The usual mistake is shopping on infrared rejection alone. Infrared is only one slice of the sun's energy, so a film can post a flashy infrared number and still let plenty of heat through.
Are these numbers independently verified?
The energy numbers are, if the film carries a rating. Always ask to see the rated spec sheet before you buy, because an unrated marketing figure is just a claim.
The National Fenestration Rating Council independently tests, certifies and labels window films for energy performance, which lets you compare products on one scale. For shading and attachment products more broadly, the Department of Energy points to the Attachments Energy Rating Council label, which reports a product's U-factor, solar heat gain coefficient, visible transmittance and air leakage.
For the ultraviolet claim, the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation requires documented proof of 99 percent or better blocking, so a film carrying it has been checked by someone other than its maker.

How much does heat-control window film cost in Canada?
